No one knows what happened to the Vong. The mysterious alien race lived on Mars millennia before humans even existed. Perhaps they perished in some planetary cataclysm or perhaps they left the system. Only faint traces of their civilization still exist.

But when humans begin colonizing Mars, the Vong suddenly return from deep space, and they want their home back.

At first, it seems as though the humans will hold their fledgling Martian colonies, especially when reinforcements arrive from the moons of Saturn.

But the Vong are ruthless. They take no prisoners. They eat the humans they kill. Their ships are organic machines, and their weapons are far more advanced than those of the humans. And the Vong have reinforcements, too. Including, another alien race the humans have yet to encounter.

It’s no longer a question of holding the colonies, but whether the human species will survive an all-out assault.
