This Is How It Ends by Desiree Middleton

We trusted dogs. We shouldn’t have.

Dogs are out best friend, aren’t they? We love them. We feed them and keep them warm and play games with them. We make them the heroes of our stories. Every child knows Old Yeller, Lassie, Buck, Benji, Clifford, and Scooby-Doo.

Dogs are our best friend, aren’t they? We take them for walks and keep them on leashes. We teach them to do tricks and to be obedient, to fetch and to play dead. We feed them the scraps off our tables.

Dogs our are best friend, aren’t they? We put shock collars on them and we breed them and sell their offspring. We sterilize them and put them down when we’re done with them.

So, what happens when we tamper with nature and give dogs super-intelligence? Maybe they are only our friends because they don’t know any better.

In This Is How It Ends, we’re about to find out what the canine species really thinks of us and it isn’t pretty.
